SaddlehorseBlues is returning to its roots. As of March 31, 2021, the shop will be cleared of all hardware, e-liquids, and accessories. Going forward, we will strictly sell coils and coil building materials.
We started out as a coil business in 2015, selling coils to customers and shops across North America. We continue to take great pride in the work we produce. When we added hardware to the store it was with the thought that we could provide good value, high quality, long-lasting products to the public. Products that we would, and do, use. And we have- for six years.
We have always been in the hobbyist side of the industry, for lack of a better term. We stock a bare minimum of beginner devices, focusing instead of the rebuildables market. We cater to people who are already vaping and who want to improve their experience, or to save money, or to customize their use. That’s our space.
But quite simply, it’s become too expensive to operate in this rapidly changing regulatory environment. The margins on hardware are already very slim, especially by the time you factor in subsidizing shipping, packaging materials, discounts, etcetera. We have tried to accommodate every new additional regulation that the Canadian government institutes but with this year’s crackdown on rebuildable atomizers, following on the heels of other significant changes (disallowing the use of any characters on products or packaging, for example), and with more changes on the way, we cannot afford to keep buying and replacing products.
Additionally, the products that are “legal” in Canada are becoming increasingly restricted. Not a single RDA has been approved for sale in Canada according to the new rules. That puts us in a bind. Switching to pods and other disposables would be a break from our business model and in a market we aren’t likely to be competitive in, leaving aside our personal reservations. We also can’t justify the cost of apps that prevent people buying the products that are no longer allowed in their jurisdictions. It is hard enough to subsist on tiny margins without also paying to prevent sales.
We’re not immune to the hurt and the damage that this constant battle with government has wrought, and it has taken a toll on us: financially, mentally, emotionally. We dedicate more time to advocacy than to any other single activity- with no regrets. We believe in the potential of vaping to displace smoking now and in the future, preventing countless needless deaths and illness. We believe in the power of community to make change, and over the years we’ve watched the community grow in both numbers and strength. We fully intend to remain engaged in the fight for safer nicotine products in Canada and around the world, regardless of our position in the industry.
We also plan on being in the coil business for some time to come. We’re not winding down, we’re just streamlining our offerings. We will continue to stock a full selection of custom-built coils, delivering them to customers and shops across North America.* We hope that we can continue to count on your support and, as always, we very much appreciate when you recommend us to your local shops.
In the meantime, enjoy the sales! We have a lot of great products just waiting for the perfect homes.
*Coils continue to ship easily with all major carriers as they are classified as an electronic replacement part.
