The MKI is a new and limited edition mech tube and matching RDA designed in Britain by Iona. A high polish finish with intricate engravings and precision engineering make this set-up a standout in any collection and we were very happy to be the first shop in North America to get our hands on these. I did my research ahead of purchasing these for the shop and even my high expectations were exceeded upon receiving them.
Naturally I had to claim a MK I for myself for, um, research purposes. The first thing that’s notable about these mods is obviously aesthetic. When Iona says “high polished finish” they aren’t playing. The stainless steel (SS317L) looks almost like chrome. The CNC machine engravings are also expertly done, featuring a bird in flight on the mod as well as the name Iona and the serial number below it. The switch features an escalating diamond pattern and the button is engraved with a repeating MK I that reminds me a bit of how Gucci does some of it’s branding. The tube is a non-removable hybrid type and is 25mm wide, 97mm tall (131mm with included RDA and tip,) and weighs in at 193g. (240g with included RDA.) The MK1 is powered by a single 18650 battery and the tube is sized perfectly for popular cells like the VTC5A.
The matching 25mm RDA is very simplistic in it’s external aesthetic with no visible engravings (the serial number is engraved on the underside of the atomizer). It is dual airflow only with vertical cyclops openings. The cap has a unique shape to it so it will easily line up with the airflow directly opposite the coils. It’s so easy to place the cap on and give a slight twist until it drops in place. The pre-installed o-rings give a fairly loose fit and the extras provided give a tighter fit. I found that I like using one of each for the cap tightness I prefer. That way I also have a complete set of extras for the future.
It features four beefy posts at the outside circumference of the deck so that once installed, the coils face each other inwards and are centered, aligned perfectly with the airflow. This is an interesting feature of the deck leaving more than ample room for loads of wicking material and the wick is not touching the barrel. This coil placement allows for dripping directly through the drip tip onto the coils and not hitting the posts, no need to remove the cap. My personal preference with this RDA are a set of 2.5mm Staggered Fused Claptons. They’re coming in at about 0.16 Ohms and I’m getting really dense vapour, full flavour, and a good ramp up time. The screws in the posts are flathead and have nice deep grooves.
The switch on the MK1 has two springs installed. One is for the button which gives a very smooth, short throw. I was pleased to see that I could push the button anywhere on its surface and the mod fires. No grinding and no need to hunt for the middle. The second spring pushes an ultem ring that rests against the battery automatically eliminating rattle or the need to adjust for it. That’s a huge plus. The switch assembly is locked together with 2 small grub screws. The threads on the switch, the hybrid and the 510 of the RDA are all done extremely well. Venting for the mod is through a hole that runs right through the centre of the contact and the button.
The set-up comes packaged in a slick looking black and purple box and includes a few extras, perhaps most notably a 2 mm thick polished SS317L authenticity card. A really nice touch, in my opinion. It also comes with a product safety booklet, and a little box containing 2 spare o-rings, 2 spare springs, a spare drip tip o-ring, 2 spare post screws, 2 spare grub screws and an Allen wrench.
Did I mention that there were only 200 of these mods made? That’s kind of unheard of these days with even limited editions being released in much higher volumes. I have no doubt that Iona could have released 2,000 of these and people would still be vying to get one but with only 200 in existence these are a hot ticket item and sure to make a collector very happy, and the envy of the mech crowd.
The Iona MK1 is an excellent addition to any collection of quality high end mech mods. It’s beautifully engineered and manufactured, and performs extremely well. I really enjoy mine and look forward to using for a very long time. Highly recommend snapping one of these up if you make it in time.
